House with Leaves in Fall

Fall Outdoor House Maintenance To-Do

It’s hard to believe with temperatures climbing near 100 degrees outside today, but summer is nearly coming to an end. Labor day weekend in only a few days away and the next thing you know, leaves will start falling to off the trees and apple picking will become everyone’s favorite weekend activity. Another important task that occurs during the fall is home maintenance. Homeowners are taking fewer vacations and have more time to work on and around their house. Here are some of the more important items that you should be sure to do this coming fall to prepare for winter.

1. Tree & Shrub Care:

If you have trees on your property, consider getting them trimmed prior to the winter. Broken tree limbs or dying trees heading into the winter can cause issues and can put your houses roof and siding in danger. It is also important to make sure that no trees are hanging over your house. With snow buildup, a tree branch hanging over your house is very dangerous and just asking for problems.

2. Clean Gutters & Downspouts:

After most of the leaves have fallen off the tree, make sure to clean your gutters and downspouts. If you head into the winter with clogged gutters and downspouts, you’re simply asking for trouble. Clogged gutters in the winter don’t allow water to drain and it just sits there. Then, when the temperature drops, the water will freeze and ice dams can follow. That means damage to your gutters and leaks into your roof!

3. Make Exterior Roofing & Siding Repairs:

Heading into the winter with something wrong with your roof or siding will simply make the problem 100% worse. That means broken shingles or a crack in your siding! If either your roof or siding is past their life expectancy, getting a new replacement during the fall is the perfect time for your roof or siding.

4. Add Weatherstripping:

If you’ve noticed that your older windows aren’t providing a seal tight bond between the outdoors and indoors, adding weatherstripping may be a good temporary solution before getting new windows. This will at least help a little bit with keeping the winter warmth inside and the cold temperature outside.
