You just went through the entire process of getting a new roof for your house. You looked for a contractor, they installed the new roof and everything looks great. Does this mean you’re set for years to come? Well, not necessarily. A properly installed roof is something that not every contractor can do. People cut corners and while you may not notice it right away it will cost you stress and repair costs in the future. Roofing is more than just putting new shingles on a house. Here are some common things that roofing contractors make mistakes on when installing a new roof.
Poor Overall Installation: Even if you choose the best shingles available, that doesn’t mean you have a good installation. It’s important that your contractor is experienced with the product they are using. They should know important aspects such as the product manufacturer’s roof deck protection, leak barriers, and ventilation and house it works with your home.
Cheap Materials: You shouldn’t always use the contractor who has the cheapest price because that could mean their materials such as edge metal, sealants, or leak barriers are sub-par. Double check what materials your contractor is using to make sure your roof will be in good condition for years to come.
Poor Ventilation: It’s something you may not understand but a balanced attic ventilation system is crucial. Make sure that when you get a new roof that your contractor addresses your ventilation.
Flashing: There are some contractors that simply put chimney flashing on a house as design rather than function. Ask how your contractor is adding flashing because many use caulk and it can break down over time.
Contractors do cut corners! Be sure to ask for recommendations, find online reviews and ask how long they have been in business for. Alot of contractors wont stay around for long if they have been found to cut corners.
