If the spot on your roof is isolated these two options could be to blame:
- Flashing on a roof can cause these stains.
- Overhanging trees can cause stains
Color of your Stains:
Another way that you can identify exactly what is wrong if based off the color of the stains.
Red: This may be rust… this can go along with our top point of flashing , a metal chimney or metal antenna.
Black: This may be algae growth or tree debris…… Algae growth is very common in shaded areas of your house. Black stains are also caused from dirt, soot or other organic debris which can commonly come from trees.
White: This may be paint…. Nearby dormers, gables or possibly painted flashing can wash off onto your roof.
Green: This may be alage, fungus or moss.
It is important that after noticing these issues that you contact a roofing specialist. You have many different options to take between cleaning your roof, replacing your roof or doing nothing.
