What We Don’t Do: Finger-Jointed Cedar Siding
Cedar trees aren’t particularly big. As such, you typically have to buy cedar in random lengths to get good quality. Naturally, this can get expensive. To save on costs, many Boston-area siding contractors use what’s called finger-jointed cedar siding.
Finger-jointed cedar is made from leftover cedar that’s too short to use on its own. This piece of lumber is connected via “finger jointing” with others to whatever length is required.
There’s a reason finger-jointed cedar siding is cheap.
As the wood expands and contracts with temperature changes, the joints can become separated. This weakens your overall siding and actually pushes the planks apart. As this separation occurs, the joints become more and more visible through the paint.
Not good!
Finger-jointed cedar siding is inexpensive, but we don’t touch the stuff; we use ONLY solid cedar and other species of wood. They cost a little more and take a little more time to install. But the results are absolutely worth it.
